American highway numbers are not arbitrary. Two overlapping national systems use deliberate and opposing conventions, and the numbers carry usable information once the pattern is known.

Two systems run in parallel

The older US route network was numbered first, covering long-distance roads that pass through towns and carry local traffic alongside through traffic.

The later Interstate system was built to a controlled-access standard, with grade-separated junctions and no direct property access, and was numbered independently.

The two coexist across the country, which is why a US route and an Interstate can share the same number in the same region without any relationship between them.

The conventions run in opposite directions

US route numbers generally increase from north to south and from east to west, reflecting the order in which the network was laid out.

Interstate numbers were deliberately reversed, increasing from south to north and from west to east, specifically so the two systems would not be confused.

In both systems, odd numbers run broadly north to south and even numbers run broadly east to west, with major transcontinental routes given numbers ending in zero or five.

Three-digit numbers describe a relationship

A three-digit Interstate number carries a parent number in its final two digits, indicating which main route it connects to.

An even first digit means the route leaves the parent and rejoins it, forming a loop or bypass around a city. An odd first digit means it is a spur that ends without returning.

This convention lets a driver infer from the shield alone whether following the route will return them to the main highway or leave them in a city centre.

Exit numbering follows two different logics

Most states number exits by the milepost at which they occur, so the exit number states the distance from the state line or route origin.

Others number exits sequentially from one end, which is simpler to read but gives no distance information and requires renumbering when an exit is added.

The distance-based approach has become the standard, and states using sequential numbering have been converting, which is why some corridors carry both old and new numbers during transition.

Exceptions accumulated over decades

Duplicate three-digit numbers appear in different states, permitted because the routes are far apart and unlikely to be confused by any single traveller.

Some routes violate the directional convention entirely, usually where a corridor was extended or realigned long after its number was assigned.

The system is therefore a strong pattern with documented exceptions rather than a strict rule, which is typical of infrastructure numbering that has been in continuous use for generations.
